Noted bio-technologist Dr Swapan K Dutta today expressed apprehension that the common man's dream car 'Nano' will cause severe damage to environment due to discharge of more carbon in the air, which will ultimately cause decline in food production. University of Calcutta's Botany Professor Dr Dutta told UNI here today that commercial production of Nano car in large numbers will increase four wheeler density in urban India, which would lead to rise in carbon content in environment. ''Degradation of environment level due to global warming and other factors could cause decrease in food production by 10 to 30 per cent depending upon other elements like pollution, soil, water and others'', he said. A former senior plant biotechnologist at the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institue, Dr Dutta claimed that ''global warming could pose a threat to India's dream to emerge as a food secure nation like other developed countries.'' The biotechnologist said ''scientifically, it has been proven that one degree rise in temperature caused by global warming damaged different layers of ozones and high level of pollution have affected the food production upto 30 per cent.'' ''Botechnologists and agriculture scientists are working world over, particularly in developed countries of Europe and America, to genetically modify the seeds to give higher production even in depleted environment condition,'' Dr Dutta added. |
