| Skoda
Auto India today launched its much-awaited mid-sized sedan Rapid in the
domestic market at a price ranging between Rs 6.75 lakh and Rs 9.19 lakh
(ex-showroom Delhi). Powered by 1.6 litre engine, the made-in-India car
will be available in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol variant
of the Rapid will be available between Rs 6.75 lakh and Rs 8.99 lakh,
while the diesel version is priced at Rs 7.95 lakh to Rs 9.19 lakh. The
Rapid, based on group firm Volkswagen s Vento platform, will be manufactured
at the group s Chakan plant in Pune. We intend to strengthen our presence
in the highly competitive C segment in the country with this launch. We
are confident that this car will become the cornerstone for the Skoda
brand in India, said Mr Thomas Kuehl, Member of the Board & Director,
Sales & Marketing, Skoda Auto India. Its distinctly fresh, young,
smart and clear-cut design makes Rapid a well-balanced car and therefore
successfully fills the gap between Skoda Fabia and the current Laura,
he said. Mr Kuehl said the car is ideal for the Indian streets with an
attractive design, ample space, excellent safety equipment and modern
proven technology. With this offering, the Rapid is expected to become
the cornerstone for brand Skoda in India, he added. Talking to reporters
here, company s associate director (sales and aftersales) Ashutosh Dixit
said, We are targetting to sell more than 2,000 cars every month. The
C segment is likely to grow at above five per cent this year. Mr Dixit
said the company expects more demand for the diesel model as there is
huge difference in fuel price with petrol. Currently, the carmaker has
90 dealerships in India, and expects to have about 100 by the year-end.
